Smart Agriculture – How to Improve the Throughput of the Soil using IoT?
There is no question that the world population is growing exponentially and that it must be ensured that sufficient food is provided for all. As we know, agriculture is the major source of food for people. Moreover, severe climate changes are affecting our planet, causing a major impact on agriculture. Consequentially, droughts, floods, alluvium, and desertification affect throughput of the soil. Countries in the Southern Hemisphere, where the majority of developing nations are located, have economies which strongly depend on agriculture. Several of these nations never went through the Industrial Revolution. In virtually all of them, agricultural labor is manual and minimal technology is applied to improve productivity. This presentation will provide a brief overview of agricultural IoT systems already implemented and their weaknesses. It will then present our IoT proposed solution based on an ARC processor, sensors and actuators, that together improve the throughput of the soil.
Victor Grimblatt has an engineering diploma in microelectronics from Institut Nationale Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG – France) and an electronic engineering diploma from Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria (Chile). He is currently R&D Group Director and General Manager of Synopsys Chile, leader in Electronic Design Automation (EDA). He opened the Synopsys Chile R&D Center in 2006. He has expertise and knowledge in business and technology and understands the trends of the electronic industry very well; therefore, he is often consulted for new technological business development. He is also a PhD student at University of Bordeaux where he is developing an IoT system for smart agriculture. He has published several papers in EDA and embedded systems development, and since 2007 he has been invited to several Latin American Conferences (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay) to talk about Circuit Design, EDA, and Embedded Systems. Since 2012 he is chair of the IEEE Chilean chapter of the CASS. He is also the President of the Chilean Electronic and Electrical Industry Association (AIE).
