Emerging Memory for Artificial Intelligence and IoT
Abstract
Latest developments of A.I. and IoT put different requirements on memory from traditional applications. Speed and density are not the only criteria for choosing an adequate memory solution; power consumption is becoming the dominant constraints on the outlook of the coming new technologies. In this paper, we will review several categories of emerging memories, including ReRAM, PCRAM, MRAM, and several special memories, and cast them in light of the special requirements for artificial intelligence and IoT. There are two types of artificial intelligence, one for the computing-intensive training and one for the edge intelligence. These two applications may favor different flavors of memories. IoT itself is not an industry. IoT includes smart home, smart automotive, industry 4.0, and many others, with all kinds of mixed interface between machine and machine or people. Different IoT applications will also favor different kinds of memory. Therefore, in the era of A.I and IoT, an off-the-shelf standard memory may not be the best solutions; however, application-specific memory solution requires more in-depth knowledge of memories to optimize the performance per power. This paper will attempt to give an overview of the emerging memories landscape and assess their competitive advantages for various applications.
