On Dependability of Spiking Neural Networks
Abstract
Hardware implementation of neural networks is a hot research topic and is now considered as strategic for several large companies nowdays. Top projects in neuromorphic engineering have led to powerful brain-inspired chips able to simulate numerous spiking neurons working in non-von Neumann computer architectures. These technologies need to fit embedded systems or Internet-of-Things (IoT) requirements therefore, their energy consumption is a critical parameter that needs to be minimized. The purpose of this presentation is to focus on design, reliability and test of the bio-inspired hardware implemented neuromorphic architectures. It will cover strategy for designing synaptic arrays using novel non-volatile devices allowing for low-power and robust on-line learning. It will go over design constraintsand new challenges for the test of such circuits, by focusing on the generation of test vectors for both the deterministic and stochastic parts of the circuit, as well as on the test access mechanism required to excite and observe possible faults. Finally it will present the effect of meaningful emerging devices reliability issues on the learning and recognition properties of a fully-connected Spiking Neural Network designed for specific application.
Biography
Prof. Dr. Lorena Anghel is Full professor at Grenoble Institute of Technology in Microelectronics and Embedded Systems Engineering and member of the research staff of TIMA Laboratory. She received the PhD from Grenoble Institute of Technology in 2000, Cum Laudae. Her research interests include hardware design and test of neural networks chips, on-line testing, fault tolerance, and digital reliable design and verification. She has been involved in several European Projects (FP5 and FP7) and French National projects ANR. Dr. Anghel has served on numerous technical program committee of conferences and symposiums. She had fulfilled positions as General Chair, Program Chair, and has been part of the Organizing Committee for many prestigious IEEE conferences in design automation and test domains, such as DATE, IEEE VTS, IEEE ETS, IEEE On-Line Test Symposium, DCIS Conference. She has been a co-founder of SERESSA Summer School and Test Spring School. She is involved in the Steering Committees of IEEE European Test Symposium and Design Automated and Test in Europe. Dr. Anghel has been recipient of several Best Paper and Outstanding Paper Awards. Dr. Anghel has published more than 130 publications in international conferences and symposia and she has supervised 24 PhD Students, several post docs and more than 30 master and engineering students. Dr. Anghel is currently Deputy Vice President at Grenoble INP, in charge of Industrial relationships.
