Title:

SoC energy management via feedback control for data parallel applications with throughput constraints

Abstract:

Energy efficiency is one of the crucial concerns today in computing systems. Recent SoCs comprise an increasing number of voltage-frequency islands (VFI) that should be controlled at application level, to reduce energy consumption. In this context, this talk proposes a proportional-integral feedback controller tailored for data flow applications with throughput constraints. As a research vehicle, we employ a tiled many-core architecture with four VFIs. The use case is a data parallel application described utilising the Multicore Communications API (MCAPI). The controller settings are investigated for application configurations with different QoS levels and different buffer sizes. Several state-of-the-art controllers are compared. We find that the proportional-integral controller achieves similar energy reduction with significantly fewer number of VF switches and, in addition, it meets throughput constraint in cases where other approaches fail.
