Nanophotonics for low-latency optical integrated circuits
Download SlidesAbstract
On-chip photonic systems are expected to cause a paradigm shift in networks on a chip. They have the potential to provide low latency processing because the resistance and capacitance of electric circuits do not restrict the signal propagation speed in an optical line. In this talk, I will describe a pass gate logic circuit in which calculations can be done simply by propagating the light through electrically controlled optical pass gates, which is conceptually similar to the pass transistor logic circuit in electronics. In this scheme, the calculation speed is simply determined by the optical path length. That is, the key issue is decreasing the size of the optical devices. I’ll also discuss nanophotonics technologies that enable us to minimize the optical path length and boost the calculation speed owing to the tight light confinement effect. These wavelength-scale and integrable devices are promising for dense photonic networks in processor chips. This work was supported by CREST, JST. Grant Number JPMJCR15N4.
