Designing efficient and dependable embedded systems for critical applications
Abstract
In mission-critical or safety-critical application domains (aerospace, space, railway …), the design of embedded systems is primarily driven by non-functional requirements that have traditionally been met by the use of conservative design approaches. It has led to power and performance overheads due to safety and reliability margins. The current trend of adding more functionalities and of a higher integration now challenges existing approaches. This talk will discuss the issues and opportunities related to the evolution of these systems toward dynamic systems and mixed-critical applications. As an example, it will present a new methodology for the statistic reliability evaluation of computing systems that could open the way to an optimized use of fault tolerance techniques. It will also cover the reduction of the execution time margins actually used to guarantee the real-time behavior of applications.
Biography
