Energy Efficient Network-on-Chips with Opportunistic Circuit-Switching for MPSoCs

As the number of cores per die continues to scale up, the size and complexity of Networks-on-Chips (NoCs) grow dramatically, and hence their power consumption is a more severe concern. Modern NoCs rely on virtual channel flow control to allow effective utilization of link bandwidth at the cost of higher power consumption and longer per-hop latency. Though there exist many optimization techniques for virtual channel flow control, we leverage circuit-switching which already satisfies the performance requirements with much smaller power consumption and shorter per-hop latency when the network is not busy. In this talk, we propose to opportunistically enable circuit-switching in the network implemented with the virtual channel flow control. This allows us to effectively reduce the power consumption of NoCs through having less buffering and longer sleep intervals in power-gating while retaining small per-hop latency.
Biography
Masaaki Kondo received the B.E. degree in College of Information Sciences and the M.E degree in Doctoral Program in Engineering from University of Tsukuba in 1998 and 2000 respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in Graduate School of Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 2003. He is currently an associate professor in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo. His research interests include computer architectures, high-performance computing, and cognitive computing.
