Abstract

Over the coming years a great variety of new Internet of Things (IoT) applications is expected to emerge, with large numbers of interconnected devices. For many IoT applications, these devices will combine functionalities for sensor processing, communication, and security. In addition, IoT devices may have to support audio or voice processing, e.g. for music playback or voice control. A key requirement across IoT applications is to offer lowest energy consumption, specifically for battery-operated devices. We will discuss how processor solutions can implement the required functionalities in an energy-efficient way through smart processor architectures complemented with application-specific processor extensions.
